Cozy Cafe in Hyewha | Cafe Matiere

Not too long ago a friend and I stumbled upon a cute and cozy coffee shop in #Hyewha (혜화) that had not only great coffee but also awesome cake! What else could one ask for? The cafe is called 'Matiere' (마띠에르) and can be recognized easily by the huge and unique pastel blue door.

Great Coffee!

We ordered a hot vanilla latte and a Vienna. For cake, we got a strawberry cake and a carrot cake. It took a while until our orders where ready, but oh boy, it was worth it! The coffee was very nice and creamy, and the vanilla latte had black specks of real vanilla in it. Just perfect!

And Delicious Cake

The other highlight was the cake. It might be because I was quite hungry, but I'm not sure when it was the last time that I had such a delicious strawberry cake. It was not overly sweet, creamy and light. Definitely one of the best strawberry cakes I had so far in Seoul.

The carrot cake was very good as well. It was actually quite different compared to most carrot cakes available, as you can see in the picture. It seemed like a homemade cake, which is something you can't expect in every coffee shop in Seoul.

So, even if you aren't the biggest carrot cake fan, you might still like this one. I personally liked the strawberry cake a little better, but that's just a personal taste difference.

When you come into the coffee shop right in the middle of the room is a wooden table with different cakes, scones, and other small delicious treats. You can just grab one of the plates and choose whatever you feel like, and then go to the coffee counter to order your coffee and pay.

At the counter, they also have some more cakes. I assume they have those cakes at the counter because they need to be cooled. Not completely sure about that, but that's where they had the strawberry cake and also some other cakes if I remember correctly.

Later on we also shared a scone which was super delicious as well, but unfortunately I forgot to take a picture.

Prices

The prices were OK. I don't remember the exact prices, but the cakes were around 5,000 KRW each which is around $4 to $5, and the coffees were similarly priced. Not the cheapest cake and coffee I ever had, but considering the usual prices for cake and coffee here in Seoul, also not expensive. Especially, considering the quality I would say definitely worth it!

The scones and other little treats were more affordable, so that's a great alternative in case you are on a budget, or not that hungry.

Instagrammable Cafe?

Overall, the atmosphere of the coffee shop was very calm and cozy. It definitely is 'instagrammable' as it has some cute corners. It seemed like the few seats near the window were quite popular for pictures.

However, it isn't one of those cafe's that people go to mainly for pictures. You can take some cute pictures while you are there, but I would mostly go for the coffee and the cake. Next to the inside of the cafe, the unique and pastel colored door is a great picture opportunity.

Also, even though we went on a weekend, it wasn't too crowded either which is always a huge plus for me!

Overall

My verdict, 100% recommended! When you are in Hyewha or anywhere near in Seoul, you should drop by and try it for yourself.
